- Can any type of tattoo be treated successfully?
Most tattoos can be removed effectively with the help of laser treatment. Yet, results cannot be guaranteed. Tattoos vary greatly in colour, density and size, and some respond easily to treatment whilst others don't. Black tattoos are normally most easily removed by laser treatment. However, some colours are very difficult to treat, e.g. white, yellow, orange, some red and green tattoos containing fluorescent or acrylic dyes.
- How many sessions of laser treatment are required for tattoo removal?
An average number of seven (7) - ten (10) treatment sessions are normally required at regular intervals in order to remove tattoos. Some tattoos may disappear in a lesser number of sessions but how many sessions in all may be needed for the tattoo to disappear stays a question, which can't be answered before treatment. To ensure optimal and relatively rapid success, an interval of 1 month is normally recommended in between treatment sessions. Faster is actually not possible.
- Is tattoo removal by laser painful?
The treatment itself can give a 'stinging' sensation which can be diminished or eliminated by applying a local anaesthetic gel to the skin. This also helps you to feel more relaxed. Normally, no pain killers are given to patients after laser tattoo removal, though in the first days after treatment some may take a pain killer, such as paracetamol.
- What immediate changes can I expect to see on my skin after laser treatment of my tattoo?
First of all, you will see that the color of the tattoo has faded immediately after the laser treatment and in its place the treated skin zone has whitened. There will be a certain degree of redness and swelling as well as bruising with point bleeding as immediate reactions of the treated skin. In some 10 minutes you will see that the color of the tattoo is restored as before the treatment, i.e. the tattoo will darken or regain its former color again. However, this tattoo color will be somewhat lighter. Then you will see the skin all around the tattoo reddening and swelling a bit more. Further, the point bleeding stops as a result of tamponage and application of a medicated dressing. Some small blisters may even appear but all these changes form part of the normal process of laser tattoo removal taking into consideration that your skin tissues are not dead but living and will, therefore, react to the effect of rapid breaking down and scattering of the tattoo ink molecules.
- Is there any scarring left after laser tattoo removal?
Nd YAG laser treatments for tattoo removal don't cut or burn the skin surface. Therefore, the laser treatment results cause practically no permanent scar tissue. However, some loss of pigment (hypo-pigmentation) or excess pigment (hyperpigmentation) of the treated area may occur after completion of a course of treatment. This will normally be expected to fade after 6 months after which, normal skin coloring and texture should be regenerated. For some people these changes may be permanent. In this minimal number of cases, the patient may further have microdermabrasion or fractional laser treatment (FLT) or intense pulsed light treatment (IPL) or low-level (soft) laser treatment done as per indications in order to remove all abnormal signs on the skin surface.
- How long will the redness, swelling and bruising hold after a laser tattoo removal procedure?
The swelling and bruising will decrease day by day and will normally disappear completely in some 7 to 14 days. Redness may persist for a month or longer for several months as there is a positive inflammatory reaction in the skin causing the latter to heal. That is an absolutely normal process of healing.
- Which precautions should I take?
After the laser tattoo removal treatment, you should take care to keep the treated skin area clean and dry (avoid water on this area) and use the ointment and/or any other medication as prescribed to you by your doctor.
Further, you should avoid direct sunlight on this zone as well as direct heating due to closeness to any heat source, e.g. avoid sauna, stoves, ovens, grills, furnaces, etc.
Also, avoid eating spicy food, chillies and hot sauces. Avoiding to eat animal protein (meat, chicken, etc.) frequently helps avoiding harzardous reactions leading to swellings, itching and scarring. In case of allergies or hypersensitivity of the skin, one may be advised to take anti-allergic/anti-histaminic medications to avoid adverse reactions.
- How much can I expect to pay for a session of laser removal of a tattoo?
Cost of a laser treatment session for removal of a tattoo varies widely, mostly depending on the size of the tattoo. Generally, one session of laser tattoo removal may cost as from 2,000 Mauritian rupees to 25,000 Mauritian rupees or more. The surface area (size) of the tattoo as well as its colors essentially determine the price. The larger the surface area of a tattoo, the higher the price. The number of tattoos will also definitely influence the price.
